the way – ah, to deny myself – 1/10/13

I’m trying to figure out, or otherwise get to know, what it means to take up my cross and follow after Jesus.  My heart wish and choice is to bring more and more of such words to life in my life. That’s one of the reasons behind my poetry.
Sometimes I wonder if that is such a wise choice.

I hear him saying ….

deny yourself
take up your cross
and follow me

embrace suffering
do not fear
my grace is sufficient for you
I will be with you

seek my word
in all situations
when you are lost
when you are hanging on
when you are afraid
when you celebrate
when you sorrow
when you are angry
and hear me

my word may disappoint
but die to such unmet expectations
and rejoice in the joy to come*
when the word is complete
in you
in your walking it out

(*often taking 2 years to arrive )

About Clark W Johnson

I am a poet, interested in using poetry to explore my interactions with the spiritual. I find poetry captures tension, paradox and flow well enough so I can hold experiences at arms length and reflect on them from multiple vantage points. As I walk deeper with my God, I'm finding such a record invaluable for myself, and I find that pieces and parts touch others as well. I love and long for more points of contact along those lines.
