Giving: my translation – 3/1/12

Matthew 6

Giving and generosity, seem to be centered in relationship. If I know the one (or ones) I am giving to, and if I love them at some level, then it seems to me that my giving is going in the right direction. It may not be perfect, but, like all things, becoming a good giver takes practice, mistakes and grace.

Watch your giving
to others
are you paying attention
to your watching friends
those who will hear the stories tomorrow

are you giving from your fullness
or from your trash
discarded things
cast offs

do you see the one you are helping
in their world
through the eyes of one of their friends
who knows them well enough
to know just where and how to apply
the gift
no matter how small

will you listen
seriously
to what is asked for
and give accordingly

loving demonstrated
in secret
is seen by your Father in heaven
who smiles

About Clark W Johnson

I am a poet, interested in using poetry to explore my interactions with the spiritual. I find poetry captures tension, paradox and flow well enough so I can hold experiences at arms length and reflect on them from multiple vantage points. As I walk deeper with my God, I'm finding such a record invaluable for myself, and I find that pieces and parts touch others as well. I love and long for more points of contact along those lines.
